  • vpn for trading, actually necessary or just paranoia
    DeanD Dean

for serious traders i recommend vpn even at home. not for circumventing anything but for security. your trading credentials are worth real money and not having your traffic patterns publicly visible to your isp (or wherever your isp sells data to) is good practice.

  • what is your actual realistic monthly return target
    DeanD Dean

no telegram guru numbers please. real ones from real consistent traders.

for context - im in year 4 of trading, consistently profitable for the last 18 months. my actual realized monthly return is around 3-5% on average. some months 8, some -2. averages out to about 4%.

i used to think 10% monthly was achievable until i actually got consistent. now i realize anyone claiming 20%+ monthly is either lying or about to blow up.

curious what serious people target and what they actually achieve.

  • thinkmarkets after the regulation changes 2026
    DeanD Dean

applied for pro client in feb. process took 3 weeks, needed bank statements, employer confirmation, trading history showing experience. once approved leverage is back to 200:1 on majors. but you lose ASIC compensation scheme coverage. trade-off.

  • how do you know a strategy fits YOU and not just looks good in a backtest
    DeanD Dean

a good backtest and a good fit are two different things and you need both. the tell that a strategy doesnt fit you is exactly what youre describing, persistent hesitation and second-guessing even when the rules are clear. that friction means youll execute it poorly under pressure no matter how good the stats are, and poor execution destroys a good strategys edge. a worse-backtesting strategy you can execute flawlessly often beats a better one you keep fumbling. fit is part of the edge, not separate from it.

  • candlestick patterns alone, sufficient or context-only
    DeanD Dean

tested classic candlestick patterns systematically across multiple instruments and timeframes. results: in isolation, win rate roughly 50-52% (basically coin flip). with context (at major support/resistance, in trending direction, at confluence points) win rate climbs to 60-65%. the patterns themselves have minimal edge. the context they signal within does. patterns + context = useful. patterns alone = noise.

    Strategies & Systems

  • confirmation bias in trading, how do you actually fight it
    DeanD Dean

this is actually correct and the most practical advice in this thread. design systems that work even when your bias is active. mechanical rules, hard stops, no overrides during open positions. you cant fight bias, you can engineer around it.

    Trading Discussion psychology

  • public accountability log, rebuilding after blowing an account
    DeanD Dean

one more for the log: write down, now, the exact feeling that preceded the revenge trade that blew the account. you want to recognise that specific internal state in real time so you can step away when it returns, because it will return. naming the trigger now, in calm, gives present-you a warning siren for future-you. the blowup is only wasted if you dont extract that one piece of self-knowledge from it.

  • anyone actually completed a full payout cycle with fundednext lately
    DeanD Dean

the survivorship caveat is valid and worth holding. that said, payout-experience threads do still answer the specific question that matters, does the firm pay people who reach the payout stage. whether you personally reach that stage is about your trading. the thread can confirm the firm pays the finishers, it cant tell you youll be one. keep those two separate.

    Prop Firm Discussion

  • market structure analysis, comparing schools of thought
    DeanD Dean

the more i study trading, the more i realize 'market structure' means different things to different traders:

    • classic technical: trend lines, channels, higher highs/lower lows
    • wyckoff: accumulation, distribution, springs, upthrust
    • SMC/ICT: order blocks, FVGs, liquidity sweeps, BOS/CHoCH
    • auction theory: value area, balance, breakout/breakdown

these all describe similar things with different vocabulary. for those whove studied multiple schools: do any add real edge beyond classic TA, or is it mostly the same concepts repackaged?

  • vps latency to broker, does 1ms vs 50ms actually change anything for retail
    DeanD Dean

forex vps providers brag about 1ms latency to the broker like its life or death. for a retail trader, not an HFT shop, does the difference between 1ms and 50ms actually change my fills in any way i'd notice, or is it pure marketing for people who dont scalp tick charts?

    VPS & Hosting vps latency

  • is fading retail sentiment a real edge or a gimmick tools sell
    DeanD Dean

the trolls heuristic is crude but a useful filter, a genuine standalone edge mass-marketed to retail tends to decay as everyone piles in. sentiment-fading specifically survives mildly only because its a weak behavioural tendency at extremes, not a strong tradeable signal, which is exactly why it cant support a profitable subscription on its own. the modest real effect and the marketed promise are very different sizes. keep the small free insight, skip the oversized paid promise.

    Market Sentiment sentiment

  • session and killzone highlighter indicators, actually useful or clutter
    DeanD Dean

the highlighter itself does nothing, but the information it represents is real. forex genuinely moves differently by session, london and the london-new york overlap carry most of the daily range on majors. a shaded box just saves you from checking the clock. useful as a reminder, worthless as a signal.

    Indicators & Tools

  • blueguardian funded program - anyone testing their new structure?
    DeanD Dean

actually the prop firm space is consolidating, not expanding. payment processor crackdowns in late 2025 killed many shady operators. the survivors are mostly legit. blueguardian among them so far.

    Prop Firms evaluation

  • harmonic patterns, useful tool or retired strategy
    DeanD Dean

traded harmonics seriously 2019-2021. won rate was around 55% with proper rules, R was 1.8. genuine edge for a while. by 2022 i noticed setups completing but no longer leading to profitable moves consistently. either too many traders entered the space or algos started front-running them. moved on. would i recommend learning? for educational completeness yes, as a primary edge in 2026 no.

    Strategies & Systems

  • posting my live eurusd short here for accountability, poke holes in it
    DeanD Dean

taking a short on eurusd, entry around a clear lower-high after the daily rejected a resistance zone, stop above the swing high, target the prior demand area roughly two to one. posting before im fully sized in so its honest. genuinely want people to poke holes in the idea, not cheer it. what am i not seeing?

  • forex.com for US residents, still the default option?
    DeanD Dean

US based traders have limited broker options because of CFTC and NFA restrictions. forex.com (gain capital) has been the default for years - they're regulated, they take US clients, they're not going to disappear.

but their costs are noticeably higher than what international clients get at brokers like ic markets. the question for fellow US traders: have you found a better alternative? oanda US? tastyfx (formerly ig)?

curious especially for active traders, where the spread/commission difference compounds.

    Forex Brokers

  • how do i know if a pine script indicator repaints before i trust it
    DeanD Dean

fastest practical test: add it to a chart, then switch the chart to bar replay and step forward one candle at a time. if the signals stay put exactly where they were, its fine. if arrows jump, disappear, or move to a better spot as new bars form, it repaints. the replay tool exposes it in about two minutes.

  • switching mt5 to a different broker server - what breaks and what to watch out for
    DeanD Dean

compiled .ex5 files usually transfer fine between mt5 instances if the mt5 build versions are similar. if the new broker rnus a significantly different mt5 build version you may need to recompile from source (.mq5 files). always keep the source files, not just the compiled binaries. if you only have .ex5 files from a third party you might hit compatibility issues on major version differences.

    MetaTrader mt5

  • switching mt5 to a different broker server - what breaks and what to watch out for
    DeanD Dean

the clean approach is to install a fresh mt5 for the new broker rather than trying to swap servers in the same installation. brokers often provide their own mt5 build with specific server configurations. your custom indicators (mql5 files) transfer completely - just copy the mql5/indicators folder. eas the same. templates and profiles also transfer via copy. what doesn't transfer: chart history (rebuilds from new broker's server) and any broker-specific settings.

  • which forex pairs should a complete beginner focus on and why
    DeanD Dean

gold is suitable for beginners in the sense that it moves a lot and is easy to watch. it's less suitable in that the spread relative to the moves is different from major forex pairs, it behaves differently during different geopolitical conditions, and news sensitivity is higher and less predictable. eurusd is cleaner for learning because the variables are more stable. learn the craft on eurusd, then gold is not a difficult add.
