building out my algo trading setup properly. been on mt5 for years, comfortable with mql5, lots of legacy code. but cTrader keeps coming up as the 'modern' choice with cleaner API (cAlgo / C#).

for those who actually moved from mt5 to ctrader for algo work: was it worth the migration cost? specifically interested in:

    • execution stability for high frequency operations
    • quality of historical tick data for backtesting
    • broker availability (mt5 has way more brokers but ctrader brokers seem more execution-quality focused)

not a beginner question - looking for practical migration experience.

migrated 18 months ago. the API quality difference is real. C# + cAlgo is cleaner than MQL5 for complex strategies. but you trade off broker diversity hard. if your broker isnt on ctrader you cant use it. for me that meant abandoning 2 backup brokers.

execution stability is comparable now - both platforms are mature in 2026. historical tick data on ctrader is actually better quality (less spread artifacts) but mt5 has more years of history available. depends on what you backtest against.

is cAlgo the same as the user interface or is it the coding part? confused about terminology

cTrader = the platform you trade on. cAlgo = the integrated dev environment for writing automated strategies (called cBots) and custom indicators. equivalent to how mt5 has the MetaEditor IDE for writing EAs.

stay on mt5. ctrader is for hipsters. the rest of the world runs mql4/mql5 ecosystem. why limit yourself.

for the type of complex multi-instrument logic i run, switching from MQL5 to C# was night and day. proper object orientation, modern type system, real testing frameworks. wouldnt go back. but if your strategies are simple price-action triggers, mt5 is fine and the migration isnt worth the pain.

ctrader if you can. mt5 if you must.
