did both for 9 months. topstep futures is rock solid, their fx offering still feels like a beta product. the5ers fx model is more mature, especially their growth program (you scale up after consistent months). i ended up keeping topstep for futures, the5ers for fx.

unfortunately yes, almost every broker reserves the right to change leverage at their discretion, especially around high-impact events, weekends, or regulatory changes. its in the terms you agreed to. the legitimate grievance isnt that they can, its that they did it with zero notice while you had open positions, which is poor practice even if its contractually allowed.

time is the wrong metric, consistency is the right one. youre ready to consider live when you have a written strategy, you follow it without improvising, and youve shown a stable, non-blown demo over a meaningful number of trades across different market conditions, not just a lucky trending week. could be two months, could be six. the calendar doesnt make you ready, repeatable behaviour does.

went through this transition about 3 years ago. the first month is genuinely uncomfortable - you feel like you've removed your safety net. the second month you start seeing the chart differently. by month three you wonder why you ever needed the indicators. the main gain is seeing price structure clearly without anchoring to indicator values. the main thing you lose is a false sense of certainty that you discover you didn't actually need.

TA is not 'useful' or 'not useful' in absolute terms. its useful when used as a structure framework not a prediction tool. SR levels still matter because thats where stop liquidity sits. fib levels work because enough traders watch them. its not magic, its crowd behavior coordination.

the places with most genuine experiences: reddit prop trading subs where users have post history, forex factory threads that are months long (hard to sustain fake engagement that long), and discord communities where you can ask people directly. anywhere someone with a track record on the platform shares their experience is better than any fresh review-style post.

the key question isn't outcome (flat equity) but process. go through your last 4 months of trades: are you still taking the same setups, with the same entry criteria, at the same risk per trade? if yes and results are worse, it's likely market regime change. if you find you've been taking more marginal setups, sizing up on frustration, or deviating from your rules, the process has degraded and the flat results are probably deserved.

the spike trading is dead for retail. completely. but trading the post-news settling period (15-60 mins after release) is still viable. price gets noisy from initial reaction, then a real direction emerges as the market digests. thats where the edge moved.

reading old entries during a drawdown to identify what changed is exactly the right move. specifically: look for the most recent entry where you felt trading was 'clicking', then track forward from there. the first sign of drift is usually in the language - entries start having more justifications, more rationalizations, less crisp trade reasons. the slip in process usually shows in the journal weeks before it shows in the p&l.

the troll is right to be cynical about recommendations. my approach: pick two providers in the right region, run a demo terminal on each for a week including a news event, keep the one that stayed responsive, cancel the other. cost me one month of two subscriptions to find a reliable host i then kept for years. cheap insurance.

frame it as counterparty risk. money sitting in a prop account is an unsecured claim against that company. every month you don't withdraw is a month you're extending credit to them. the compounding upside is real but it's conditional on the firm remaining solvent. i use a rule: withdraw at least 50% of each payout, leave 50% to compound. never let unrealized balance exceed 3x my initial challenge fee.

the troll raises something worth sitting with. there is a size that is genuinely yours and chasing beyond it can convert a profitable small trader into a blown-up larger one. the reconciliation: scale slowly and honestly notice whether the mistakes fade with acclimatisation or persist no matter how gradual you go. if they fade, it was adjustment and you can grow. if they never fade at a given level, thats your real ceiling for now, and respecting it beats blowing up to prove ego.

the biggest surprise was realizing how much the challenge rules had structured my trading in ways i didn't notice. on prop accounts the daily loss limit and drawdown ceiling forced discipline externally. on personal capital those constraints are gone and you have to create equivalent internal ones. some traders discover their discipline was partly the rules, not purely themselves. that's not a criticism, it's just worth knowing.

also whether brokers treat larger retail accounts differently in any practical sense - priority routing, dedicated support, or anything else that actually matters.

the troll is right that review is the bottleneck for most people. so the practical move is few high-signal fields you will actually maintain and review, not a sprawling form. reason, emotion, on-plan flag, lesson. four fields, religiously kept and reviewed monthly, beats a beautiful template you fill for two weeks and quit. consistency of review over richness of fields.

look at the drawdown pattern. a strategy with a smooth equity curve that suddenly takes a massive drawdown then recovers was probably taking hidden risk all along. look at how many trades per week, what the average hold time is, and whether the strategy changes over time (signal providers sometimes change their approach without announcing it). consistent strategy behavior over multiple market regimes is more trustworthy than just a high return number.

exactly that flag rewired my trading. when i tagged on-plan versus off-plan, my on-plan trades were solidly profitable and my improvised ones bled the account. the strategy was never broken, my discipline was. i would never have seen it from a profit-and-loss ledger. that one column was worth more than any indicator i ever bought.

the troll draws the right boundary. complexity can work with the data, infrastructure and rigorous validation that institutions have and retail doesnt. for a retail trader without that apparatus, added complexity almost always means added overfitting and added execution error, so simple genuinely is better for us specifically. its not that complexity is evil, its that the resources required to make complexity robust are exactly what retail lacks. simple isnt cope at retail scale, its appropriate engineering for the resources you actually have.

razor only for the proper rebate. on standard the markup eats most of it. fx and metals count, indices and crypto on cfd dont count toward volume tier as of dec 2025.

the troll collapses it a bit too far. the backend broker is one input into 'do i trust this prop to pay'. a strong regulated broker behind a prop is a small positive signal, a sketchy one is a small negative signal, alongside payout history and how long the firm has operated. weigh it, dont obsess over it alone.
