looking at vps options and linux servers are significantly cheaper and more resource-efficient than windows. i know mt5 is windows software natively. curious whether running it on linux via wine or crossover is reliable enough for actual trading or whether it's just a cost optimization that introduces new problems.

wine on linux for mt5 works but requires ongoing maintenance. the initial setup is straightforward and several tutorials exist. the issues appear when metaquotes releases a new mt5 update that breaks wine compatibility temporarily. you might be stuck waiting days for a wine version that supports the new build. for trading continuity this is a meaningful risk. windows vps gives you zero-friction mt5 updates.

the cost argument is real - a decent linux vps is $8-15/month versus $20-40 for equivalent windows specs. but the operational overhead of maintaining wine compatibility effectively has a time cost. if you're technically comfortable with linux administration and have contingency plans for update breakage, the saving is worth it. if you want something you can set up and forget, windows is much lower maintenance.

what about running mt5 in a windows docker container on a linux host? i've seen some people mention this approach.

windows containers on linux require nested virtualization which not all vps providers support. it's more complex than wine and doesn't necessarily eliminate the compatibility issues. the cleanest solution that gets you linux cost savings with windows compatibility is: linux vps running a lightweight windows vm (libvirt/kvm) that hosts mt5. this works reliably but requires technical knowledge to set up properly.

ran wine/mt5 on linux for 8 months. it worked fine until a major mt5 update in month 5 broke wine compatibility. spent 2 days troubleshooting before giving up and switching to a windows vps. the cost saving over those 8 months was about $80. not worth 2 days of troubleshooting risk on a live trading setup. switched permanently to windows vps at $25/month.

wine works but mt5 updates can break it temporarily. windows vps is worth the $10-15 premium for zero-friction updates on a live setup.
