my prop firm offers payouts via bank wire, wise, and usdc. previously always used bank wire but the crypto option is tempting since it's supposedly faster. curious about real experiences with crypto payouts from prop firms - any gotchas i should know before switching?

switched to usdc about 6 months ago. it is genuinely faster - usually same day or next day versus 3-5 days for wire. the main practical issue is what you do with the usdc afterward. if you need fiat you're converting on an exchange and the conversion fees plus spread can eat 0.5-1% depending on the platform. wire is slower but lands in your bank account ready to use.

the tax treatment of crypto payouts is more complex in most jurisdictions. receiving usdc as income is still taxable income at the value at receipt. then if usdc depegs even slightly or you hold it and there's any movement before conversion, you may also have a capital gains event. for small amounts it's manageable, for larger payouts the tax complexity might not be worth the convenience.

wise is often the best middle option people don't consider enough. faster than bank wire (1-2 days), simpler than crypto, arrives in fiat. fees are transparent and usually competitive especially for international transfers. if your prop firm offers wise, that's often the sweet spot.

do prop firms ever use the payout method to delay or complicate things? like offering crypto because it's harder for traders to trace or dispute?

on-chain crypto is actually more traceable than bank wire, not less. the concern would be the opposite: a firm could send usdc and you can verify on-chain within minutes whether it moved. it's the bank wire that's opaque to the trader. the crypto concern is more about the receiving side logistics and tax, not transparency.

wise if available = best practical choice. crypto faster but tax complexity. wire slowest but simplest accounting.
