trading journals are universally recommended but execution matters. ive tried:

    • manual spreadsheet (cheap, customizable, time-consuming)
    • tradingview notes (integrated but limited analytics)
    • tradervue (good analytics, monthly fee)
    • edgewonk (extensive, learning curve)

which has actually moved the needle on your trading? specifically interested in the metrics or insights that changed how you trade after using a journal seriously.

tradervue for 3 years now. specific insight that changed me: heatmap of P&L by hour of day showed i was net negative in the 14:00-15:00 UTC window across every quarter. removed all trades in that window, win rate jumped 4%. would never have found this without proper analytics. spreadsheets cant show patterns automatically.

+1 tradervue. similar pattern - my journal showed i was much worse trading on mondays than other days. wasn't a 'bias' i felt subjectively, was visible in the data. now i either skip mondays or trade smaller size. journal made hidden patterns visible.

is it worth paying for a journal app or is a spreadsheet enough for beginners?

for first 100 trades, spreadsheet is fine and the discipline of manually entering each trade has educational value. after 100+ trades the analytics in paid apps start providing insights spreadsheets cant. roughly: start free, upgrade when youve proven you'll actually use it consistently. paying for tradervue then not journaling is just spending money.

edgewonk has been excellent for me. its more customizable than tradervue but takes longer to set up. for traders who want very specific custom metrics and analysis it wins. for plug-and-play tradervue is faster to value.

every journal app shows you a graph that says 'you should have entered earlier and exited later'. expensive way to learn that hindsight is 20/20.

thats not what useful journals show. they show patterns in YOUR actual decisions over time - what times work, what setups work, what instruments work, where your discipline breaks. those are actionable, not hindsight.

journaling changed me from a feel-based trader to a data-based trader 🔥 some days i fight my own instincts because the data says my instincts are wrong in specific contexts. its humbling but profitable
