lesser-known prop firms that actually pay well - share your experiences

ftmo and the5ers get all the attention but there are a lot of smaller firms doing good business quietly. curious to hear from people who've used firms outside the top 5 and had good experiences. specifically interested in any that have better payout splits or more flexible rules than the big names.

take profit trader has been solid for me for about 8 months. 90% split from day one, reasonable challenge fees, paid consistently. they're not as well known as ftmo but the payout split is hard to beat. rules are a bit stricter on consistency requirements but if you have a stable strategy it's fine.

aqua funded - was skeptical because they're relatively new but had a positive experience. $50k account, passed their challenge, received two payouts over 3 months. support is responsive. i like that their trailing drawdown is end-of-day based rather than tick-based which is a real practical advantage.

checklist for vetting smaller firms: check trustpilot for recent payout confirmations not just star ratings, look at their social media for evidence of actual payouts being posted, search their name plus 'withdrawal problem' on reddit and forexpeacearmy. also check when the company was registered and whether there's a named team. don't commit large sums to firms less than 18 months old regardless of how the numbers look.

the reddit search method works surprisingly well. if a firm is silently not paying or having issues, it shows up as pattern in community posts even if there's no formal review. also check if they respond to negative reviews publicly - firms that engage with complaints honestly are a better signal than 5-star rating alone.

SurgeTrader was one i tried before they shut down. all the surface signals were fine. the lesson: diversify across at least 2-3 firms at a time. no single firm is worth putting all your funded capital into regardless of reputation. the prop firm space has enough operational risk that concentration is genuinely dangerous.
