thinking about moving most of my volume from my current broker to a competitor with better spreads. on paper it's a clear win. but ive been burned before by switching and not accounting for hidden costs or friction.
what are the non-obvious costs of a broker switch that experienced traders have run into? not looking for the obvious spread comparison stuff, more the things that bite you after you've already moved.

the most underrated cost is the relearning period. every broker's execution feels slightly different - fill speeds, requote behavior, partial fills on larger orders. your muscle memory for sizing and order placement is calibrated to your current broker. budget 2-4 weeks of slightly suboptimal execution while you recalibrate, and start with smaller size than normal.

the platform feel thing is real. also: your current broker may be more forgiving on margin calls because you've been a client for years. new brokers sometimes are more mechanical about liquidation until you establish history. had a position stopped out at a new broker during a brief spike that my old broker would have ridden through based on account history.

withdrawal then redeposit cycle: you'll lose access to open positions during transfer, potentially missing setups. if you have unrealised gains you may crystallise them for tax purposes when closing to transfer. new account kyc can take 1-3 days even with fast brokers. plan around a slow period in the market if possible.

parallel running is the right approach. start with 20% of normal volume at the new broker for 3-4 weeks. compare actual fills, slippage, connectivity, and support responsiveness with real money on the line. the theoretical spread difference means nothing if the new broker's execution is worse in practice.

also check their liquidity in the specific sessions you trade. some brokers have excellent eurusd london session fills and mediocre asian session. the aggregate spread shown on comparison sites may be skewed by the session they optimise for. test during your actual trading hours.
