thinking of taking my private journal public for accountability, but im worried it'll quietly change my trading, that ill start taking safer trades to look good, or hesitate to log the embarrassing ones. for those who went public, did it genuinely help your discipline, or did the audience subtly distort your decisions?

it changed mine in both directions and the net was positive only because i set a rule first. the good: knowing id have to log a rule-break publicly genuinely stopped some impulsive trades. the bad: i felt the pull to take cleaner-looking setups for the audience. the rule that saved it was committing to post every trade including the ugly ones before i went public. without that pre-commitment the distortion wins.

the pre-commitment to log everything is the deciding factor. public accountability helps if the deal is total honesty, and harms if you get to curate. decide before you start that the embarrassing trades go up in full, and the audience becomes a discipline tool. leave yourself the option to hide losses and it becomes a vanity project that worsens your trading.

the accountability of strangers is the weakest kind. they dont actually care about your pnl and youll realise that in a month, at which point the only thing left is the distortion of trading for an audience that isnt even watching. private discipline that doesnt depend on spectators is the real skill.

the troll has a point that external accountability fades, the audience thins and stops caring. so the honest use of a public journal is as training wheels: it can build the logging-everything habit while the novelty lasts, but the goal is to internalise the discipline so it survives after nobody is watching. if going public helps you build the habit, use it, just dont become dependent on the spectators, because they will leave and the discipline has to remain.
