screenshot every trade or just log the numbers, whats actually enough
-
some people screenshot the chart at entry and exit for every single trade, others say the numbers in a spreadsheet are all you need and screenshots are just clutter you never look at again. for a journal that actually helps you improve, are the chart screenshots worth the effort or is logging the data enough?

screenshots earn their keep for one reason numbers cant replace: they show you what the chart actually looked like at the moment you decided, before hindsight rewrote your memory. when you review a loss, the screenshot reveals whether the setup was genuinely there or you imagined it. the numbers tell you the outcome, the screenshot audits the decision. for setup-quality review, the picture is worth it.

the hindsight point is the whole case for screenshots. without one, you review a losing trade and your brain insists the setup was obviously bad, when at entry it looked fine. the entry screenshot keeps you honest about what you actually saw. i wouldnt journal without them for discretionary trades.

people screenshot hundreds of trades and review maybe five of them ever. the screenshots become a folder of digital clutter that feels like diligence. if you actually reviewed your numbers properly youd already be ahead of the people hoarding charts they never reopen.

both true, so i compromised: screenshot only the trades i tag as notable, big winner, painful loss, or rule-break. those are the ones worth reviewing visually. the routine in-between trades just get the numbers. that cut my screenshot folder by eighty percent and made me actually review the ones i kept. selective screenshots beat both extremes.

screenshot the notable ones, numbers for the rest. sensible middle.
