how long should i demo trade before going live, give me real answers
-
every answer i find is either 'demo for a week youll be fine' or 'demo for a year minimum'. those cant both be right. is there an actual signal that tells me im ready to risk real money, rather than a fixed time everyone just guesses at?
-
time is the wrong metric, consistency is the right one. youre ready to consider live when you have a written strategy, you follow it without improvising, and youve shown a stable, non-blown demo over a meaningful number of trades across different market conditions, not just a lucky trending week. could be two months, could be six. the calendar doesnt make you ready, repeatable behaviour does.
-
the across-different-conditions part is key. plenty of beginners crush a trending demo month and think theyre ready, then go live into a chop and get shredded because they only ever practised one regime. you want to have survived a range, a trend, and a volatile news week on demo before risking real money.
-
ill add the nuance the troll skips: demo also has a ceiling, because it cant teach the emotion of real money. so the honest sequence is, demo until your process is consistent across conditions, then move a small live amount specifically to learn the psychology, accepting demo took you as far as it can. dont demo forever waiting for a confidence demo cant give you.
-
how many trades is a meaningful sample, is there a rough number i should aim for on demo before judging consistency?
-
rough guide, at least 50-100 trades following your rules, ideally more, spread over weeks not crammed into days. the point isnt the exact number, its enough trades across enough conditions that the result reflects your process rather than a lucky streak. if 80 percent of your wins came in one trending fortnight, you dont have a sample, you have a story.
