the discussion around vps usually defaults to 'yes you need one' but the real answer depends on what you do. for discretionary swing traders sitting on a desktop with stable internet, do you really need a vps? the costs add up ($20-50/month for decent specs).

curious where people draw the line:

    • pure swing/position trader, opens position, walks away for days: vps overkill?
    • intraday discretionary trader at home: marginally useful?
    • algo trader 24/7 strategies: clearly necessary?

    what's your setup?

swing trader, no vps for 4 years, zero issues. positions held days to weeks, internet at home is reliable, dont need 24/7 connectivity. for my style its unnecessary cost. would only be relevant if i ran automated strategies or scalped where milliseconds matter.

+1. vps is necessary for: algo trading, scalping, anyone trading from unreliable internet, anyone running multiple monitors with multiple charts that strain a laptop. vps is unnecessary for: swing trading from home with stable internet, anyone whose strategies dont require continuous connection.

what does vps even do in a trading context? i thought it was just a remote server

it IS a remote server, but in trading context its specifically used to run mt4/5 or ctrader 24/7 close to the broker's server. benefits: zero downtime if your home internet drops, lower latency for execution (if vps is geographically close to broker), can run multiple instances of platform without straining your home pc. for retail discretionary trader these benefits often dont justify the cost.

got a vps after my home internet dropped during a major trade in 2023. it saved me twice since then when isp had issues. for my style (intraday) the $25/month is justified by insurance value alone. but if you swing trade and never need to react quickly, its overkill.

vps is sold to retail traders by vps companies. you mostly dont need it. the few who do (algo, scalper) absolutely need it. confused middle group buys it unnecessarily.

i pay $35/month for vps and dont regret it 🔥 the peace of mind of knowing my mt5 is always running and reachable from anywhere matches my style. luxury but justified for me
