vpn for trading, actually necessary or just paranoia
-
ive seen mixed advice on whether to use a vpn while trading. arguments for: privacy, geo-restriction circumvention, hide trading activity from isp. arguments against: latency added, broker geo-checks might flag your account, may violate broker terms.
for those whove genuinely tested both with and without: did using a vpn cause any issues with your broker or impact execution noticeably?

ran with and without vpn on the same broker for 3 months. latency added 8-15ms typically on a quality vpn. measurable but not impactful for any trading style i use. no broker issues during this test period - but i kept connecting from the same vpn location my account is registered in. switching locations triggered account flags.

+1. consistency of vpn location matters more than vpn vs no-vpn. brokers flag location changes as potential account takeover attempts. if you use vpn, lock it to one location consistently to avoid security holds.
-
legitimate reasons: 1) you travel and your broker is geo-restricted in some countries, 2) general privacy (your isp logs all your traffic without vpn), 3) public wifi safety. illegitimate reason: accessing brokers that dont serve your jurisdiction (violates terms, can result in frozen accounts). if youre genuine residence-and-broker-match, you dont strictly need vpn for trading.

for serious traders i recommend vpn even at home. not for circumventing anything but for security. your trading credentials are worth real money and not having your traffic patterns publicly visible to your isp (or wherever your isp sells data to) is good practice.
